OR

SOME AFFECTIONATE EXHORTATIONS TO CRISPIN THE YOUNGER

MY SON, do not make light of the dark teachings of the SCHOLARS, for their words are words of opacity.  Perspicacity is the vice of those who think that they have something to communicate.  Those who have attained to true humility, know that “everything is meaningless”: wherefore they seekest thou to make plain what is not so?

“What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be numbered.”  So says the Preacher, therefore presume not to premeditate any act which can be construed as clarification.  If an argument is obscure, let it remain so.  For all arguments are meaningless, and a mere striving after the wind.  The wind bloweth whithersoever it listeth, and no man may funnel it.

“In much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.” So it is in vain that you rise up early, and seek to discover the whereabouts of many library books: it is bootless that you take off your slippers so late, and count sheep: it is fruitless that you blow no raspberries, but speak only such syllables as are knowledge. For syllabub is worth more than many syllables, and bacon more than Francis.

To draw a parallelogram with daily life, it may easily be seen that the ordinary man in the street may greet the elite: indeed a cat can look upon a king. Miaouw. Onomatopoeic speaks in squeaks, but soliloquizing cannot beat ventriloquizing.  Shakespeare is no more eloquent than elephant - the trunk never trumpets bunk.  But “history is bunk” is, as a statement, in itself a hunk of bunk.  Monk or punk, everything is meaningless - although your preening less, if you’re bald or bold.

Be bold: don’t get sold on one mould.  It won’t hold; it’ll fold.  in Stowe-on-the-Wold, there is much gold: the bleats give many pleats, in the rag trade. The razor blade shears one’s  peers, but the seers get the leers for their fears about the tears of the washerwomen.  For where there is cloth with sloth, they are wrath and loth to soap without hope.  They know the rope(s), they’re no dope(s).  They slope off, and do not doff the hat to the fat cat.

Of the making of the gobbledygook, there will be no end.  But “he who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding”.  Don’t be a fool and drool: don’t be the ghoul on the spoul.  C’mon, pool your knowledge in a college, for after a time in the brine you’ll be fine.
You can see out to sea - just be he who will be in the leeward.  Don’t broaden your horizons for orisons: for “a man of understanding sets his face towards wisdom, but the eyes of a fool are on the ends of the earth”.  (Mirth).
